Produced by Amicus Productions, a company typically known for its blood-drenched horror films. Venturing into another genre, the studio produced this drama that follows Rosamund Stacey (Dennis), a bookish doctoral candidate who is perpetually dodging the sexual advances of the men in her life. This comes to an end when she meets George Matthews (McKellen). The film was not a box office success on its release, but is today viewed as one of the best films made by the studio.
